Ahmedabad police ready with ‘city lockdown’ plan for high-profile January events

AHMEDABAD: With three major events scheduled in the next two months — the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January; and PlastIndia exhibition in February — Ahmedabad police will, for the first time, implement a 'city lockdown' for security. Not only this. Senior police officials have been asked to carry automatic weapons like AK-47s and Insas rifles; and also teargas shells in their official vehicles.

It may be recalled that New York police had implemented a lockdown in their city after the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers of World Trade Centre.

Sources in the city police said that a 'city lockdown' means that, in the event of a security crisis, all entry and exit points of a town or city, including small roads, are 'locked' using barricades. Heavily armed police personnel guard the entry and exit points and no one is allowed to enter the city or leave it without a thorough security check.

"There are more than 100 entry and exit points in the city. We are identifying the minor and major entry and exit points. The work will be finished within three days," said a senior police official.

More recently, after the terror attack on an army school in Peshawar where 142 people, including 132 children, were killed, Indian central intelligence agencies had issued an alert about possible attacks by the LeT in major metro cities of India.

City crime branch will also prepare a Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) for responding to a security emergency during the mega events. For security purposes, four companies of SRPF have been roped in for combing and patrolling operations. "The SRP, along with the local police, will patrol in shifts during the day or night, or both.
