NEW DELHI: At least 40 members of the "Stop Acid Attacks" campaign were
detained by the police when they were staging a protest outside a
Parliament gate on Thursday morning. The police said they had to use
"mild force" to remove the protesters from the spot as prohibitory
orders were in place.
The protesters claimed that they were staging a peaceful demonstration outside Parliament when they were forcibly evicted by the police and taken to the Parliament Street police station. A few of the protesters alleged they were beaten up by the police while being removed from the spot and had to be admitted to hospital.
"The police heckled us, dragged us and took us to the Parliament Street police station where some of the male protesters were beaten up. We are not being released and see no sign of it. Two of the acid attack survivors—Rupa and Laxmi—fainted during the incident and the police have denied us any sort of medical aid," said Chetan, member of the campaign.
Cops denied these allegations saying that the protesters had reached Parliament's gate number one without any intimation or taking permission. They have also refuted allegations that the protesters were beaten up and said CCTV footage would bring out the truth.
The campaigners alleged that they have not received the Rs 3-lakh campaign that was promised to the them.
