9 dead, 7 injured in mishap on Bareilly-Shahjahanpur highway

BAREILLY: Nine people died and seven others were injured in a horrific accident on Bareilly-Shahjahanpur highway on Friday.

As per reports, the tyre of an overloaded passenger vehicle punctured, after which the driver lost control and collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. The impact of the collision was such that both vehicles were a mangled mess, with many people stuck inside.

A case of rash driving has been slapped against the driver, who has been arrested, police said.

Cops said the overloaded vehicle was heading towards Puwaya tehsil from Sadar bazaar carrying around 15 people. As it reached Sidhauli crossing, the tyre of the vehicle punctured, after which it skidded off the road and dashed against the truck coming from the opposite direction.

The impact of the accident was such that three lekhpals, one lawyer and another local died on the spot while another four died on way to hospital. Besides, seven others sustained injuries and were rushed to district hospital, Shahjahanpur where they are undergoing treatment, said superintendant of police (SP) Shahjahanpur, Rakesh Chandra Sahu.

He said that the intensity with which the two vehicles collided left many passengers trapped inside the vehicle which was badly mangled.

Hearing the cries of passengers, locals rushed to the spot along with the police and managed to take out injured passengers from the vehicle and rush them to hospital for treatment.

Police said a case has been registered under different sections of the IPC against the truck driver who has been arrested for rash driving.

Meanwhile, the scene of the accident was heartrending as locals and police took out the dead and injured passengers. Blood was spattered all across the spot where the accident took place.

Among the dead included Nar Singh (45), Ashok (40), Rajnish (40), Vineet (40), Ram Bharosey (55), Balwinder Singh (55), Rati Ram (42) all residents of Shahjahanpur and two others whose identity could not be ascertained.

The seven injured included Manchaley (35), Nirbhik Singh (40), Vikas Mishra (27), Ikrar (40), Mohd Rais (32), Parul (22) and Surendra (25).
