BAREILLY:
The Bareilly Municipal Corporation (BMC) floated a tender on Friday,
inviting applications for the construction of the first government
parking lot in the city in Shamatganj area.
The municipal authorities say that work on the project, which has a budget of Rs 35 lakh, would begin from the first week of January. It will be constructed in an area measuring 2,000 sq metre and is expected to accommodate around 100 vehicles in a single go.
The parking lot, which is coming up at Sabji Mandi Sthal in Shamatganj locality, is expected to ease the massive traffic jams caused by commuters parking their vehicles on both sides of the road.
"An agency would be finalized for handling the project in around 15 days and after that the construction would begin. It would help the locals by reducing regular traffic snarls in the area," said Sheeldhar Yadav, municipal commissioner.
The municipal authorities said that the parking space would be constructed on the ground floor and the vegetable vendors will be asked to shift to the first floor
"The parking lot will have two entrances, in opposite directions, for the smooth flow of traffic. One entrance would be for commuters going from Vikas Bhawan to Shamatganj and the other would come be open for commuters going from Shamatganj to Satellite crossing," said the municipal commissioner.
He has received the sanctioned budget for the construction of the project.
Locals have been demanding a parking space in Shamatganj area for more than two years. In absence of any government parking facility in the city, the commuters usually end up parking their vehicles on both sides of the road, leading to routine traffic bottlenecks in the area.
Durgesh Khatwani, who owns a medical shop in Shamatganj area, said, "As commuters park their vehicles on both sides of the road, it encourages small vendors to encroach upon the area. Though the road in Shamatganj area is quite wide, it appears to be a narrow lane due to encroachment. However, the upcoming project would solve this problem as vendors would be shifted to the first floor of the parking zone."
Besides this, the Bareilly Development Authority (BDA) is planning to construct a parking space in Moti Park area of Qutubkhana locality as well. "This parking zone would not be a multi-level space," said Yadav. BDA would float a tender regarding this soon.
