Postman takes Aadhar cards home, wife sends them to raddi dealer

Aligarh: Residents of Kohl tehsil, awaiting their Aadhar card, should be a worried lot because some of the UID (unique identification) cards were moments away from being sold by a 'kabadiwala' in a village located around 40 kilometres away from Aligarh. It was only a timely intervention made by passersby that saved around 200 Aadhar cards from being sold in open market in Beswa village, after a postman's wife inadvertently mistook those cards as junk while cleaning up her house.

Balkishan, who works for Aligarh post office, had brought in the Aadhar cards over to his house. He thought the cards would remain safe, and that it would give him the chance to deliver the documents to the residents of Kohl tehsil in one go. But he couldn't envisage the following chain of events. His wife, while cleaning the house, mistook the documents to be discarded articles. She called her son and asked him to deliver the 'junk' to the nearest 'kabadiwala'.

Luckily, the son was made to wait when he reached the scrap dealer's shop with the 'junk'. The scrap dealer was away and his son was manning the shop. Balkishan's son emptied the content in the shop. But since the scrap dealer's son wasn't aware of the right price for it, he asked the customer to wait.

It was then that passersby noticed Adhaar cards strewn on the shop floor. Cops were called, the administration was informed. Circle officer of Iglas police station Jitender Kumar said that on seeing the commotion, the postman's son hurriedly whisked the UID cards back home. "We questioned the postman's wife when we located the house. We learnt that the wife had mistakenly thought of the cards being mere clutter," the police officer said.

SDM Dharmendra Singh has asked the Aligarh postal department to investigate the case. Police will launch a probe only if the independent inquiry's report calls for one. SDM Singh said, "We have contacted Aligarh postal department to handle the case at their level first. If required, the police will step in."

A senior official at the post office, who is handling the case, said, "We will file the report to the police. They will probe into the matter if the final report demands one."
