Agra lawyers to protest outside Modi’s house

Agra: Over 15,000 lawyers from various district courts of the region are expected to picket outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence in New Delhi on December 19 to demand for the creation of a high court bench in the city.

K D Sharma, lawyer and convener of an action committee batting for the establishment of a high court bench at Agra, said, "Our 10-day long agitation in Firozabad, Mathura, Etah and Mainpuri among others have borne fruits and resulted in a massive support towards this cause. At Agra, lawyers organized rallies and participated in sit-in on daily basis ."

Meanwhile, a 'jan jagran rath yatra' was launched in the city on Wednesday, which went across various localities of the city and distributed pamphlets, explaining the benefits of having a high court bench in the city. Nitin Verma, vice president of Agra Advocate Association, said, "Over 2.8 lakh appeals are pending in the high court from Agra alone. The legal system has remained deadlocked for years. Opening a bench would provide immense relief to city residents."

Verma said a 'gorilla' team of 60 people has been formed. They will wave black flags in front of PM Modi's house at the national capital.

Justice Jaswant Singh Commission was constituted by the government in 1981 to examine the need for creation of another bench in the state. The Commission report had recommended setting up of the Allahabad high court's bench in Agra after going through geographical locations, litigants' convenience and other factors.
