A first-year medical student has been arrested in
connection with last month’s lynching and alleged bobbitisation of a man
at the NRS Medical College and Hospital, police said on Wednesday.
The
body of Korpan Sha, suspected of being a mobile phone thief, was
recovered from the boys’ hostel of NRS Medical College on November 16.
He was found tied to a pillar and beaten to death with bamboo sticks
allegedly by a group of junior doctors and students.
“We
have arrested Jasimuddin, a first-year student, in connection with the
lynching,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) P.K. Ghosh said.
The
medical student’s arrest comes a month after the incident, which has
drawn widespread condemnation and allegations against the authorities
for trying to “hush up” the matter.
The victim was a
mentally deranged person, who was found inside the hostel premises.
Students alleged that he was a thief. The attackers allegedly inflicted
injuries on his genitals before bobbitising him. He was beaten to death
on the suspicion that he was there to steal something.
Besides
seeking the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission,
Kolkata-based rights group Association for Protection of Democratic
Rights (APDR) has approached the Calcutta High Court to seek a probe
monitored by it.
Meanwhile, most of the students who had fled the hostel after the incident have now gradually returned.
