PILIBHIT:
A local resident has accused a doctor of removing his mother's gall
bladder on the pretext of operating upon her for cancer and fleecing Rs 2
lakh from him for the operation.
Dr Sharafat Ullah, who owns a nursing home in the district, reportedly doesn't even hold a medical degree which makes him eligible to perform surgery.
The complainant, Aqil Ahmad, a resident of Neuria town, has submitted a report to the superintendent of police, asking her to intervene in the matter. He alleged that the doctor threatened to kill him and his mother, Zaitun Begham, after they sent him a legal notice.
SP Sonia Singh said that she would examine the matter thoroughly and take necessary action if the doctor is found to be guilty.
The case came to light when the woman's symptoms for cancer persisted even after the surgery. She was discharged from the nursing home on August 8. "The doctor had assured us that she would be all right after surgery," said Ahmad.
Afraid for her life, the 50-year-old woman consulted another surgeon after undergoing a CT-scan and ultrasound. Dr B Das, suspecting liver cancer, referred her to King George's Medical University in Lucknow on November 13.
Ahmad said he took his mother to Shajan Nursing Home for a medical checkup on July 31, where Dr Sharafat Ullah diagnosed her with cancer. She was admitted and thereafter operated upon. "But her health continued to deteriorate even after she was discharged," he added.
The accused doctor, however, declined all charges and said that the woman had contacted him for the operation of her gall bladder, which was done successfully.
However, on further investigation, a close aide of the doctor and chief medical officer of Pilibhit confirmed that the accused holds an MS (master of surgery) in anatomy, which doesn't allow him to perform any kind of surgery.
Ullah rubbished the allegations and claimed that he holds an MS in anesthesia. A renowned general surgeon said that Ullah's degree was imaginary. "A specialization in anesthesia is done after getting an MD," he said.
Ahmad also provided a copy of Ullah's medical prescription to TOI. Aqil's lawyer Sanjeev Kumar Sharma said, "Mentioning the word 'surgeon' on his prescription inspite of his medical degree clearly points to his fraudulent activities."
