BHUBANESWAR:
Maoist central committee member Jampanna had a narrow escape on
Wednesday in an anti-insurgency operation in Telan reserve forest on the
Kalahandi-Kandhamal border.
Jampanna, who is carrying a reward of Rs 25 lakh on his head, led the rebels in the 2008 Nayagarah armoury loot and 2004 Koraput district armoury attack.
Acting on a tip off, special operations group and district voluntary force personnel launched a joint operation in the forest. Jampanna opened fire first and the forces retaliated. "The firing continued for nearly one hour.
Jampanna, along with other armed cadres, took shelter in the dense forest. The forces are still deployed at six different locations in the forest to flush them out and look for casualties," Kalahandi SP Brijesh Kumar Rai said. IG (south-western range) Yeswant Kumar Jethwa said Jampanna was trying to spread base in Kalahandi. "It is evident from the camps that Jampanna had bigger plans in the district. The forces destroyed four camps, which had solar panels for generating electricity. They also recovered several kitbags, solar panels, radio sets, batteries, uniform and live ammunition," Jethwa said, adding, "We have strengthened intelligence to get more inputs about his movements."
"Jampanna was earlier operating under the Dandakaranya zonal committee of the Maoists. Recently, he was given the assignment to expand the area of influence from Kandhamal to Kalahandi," Jethwa added.
A senior police officer said Maoist camps on the Kalahandi-Kandhamal border carried special significance. "This is the first time that their base was found close to the Kandhamal border. It seems they are trying to make use of the forested areas," he added.
