HYDERABAD:
Over three lakh households in the city may get affected if the
Telangana government goes ahead and restricts Manjira water for
irrigation needs of Medak farmers. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water
Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) presently supplies 340 million
gallons of water per day (MGD) to Greater Hyderabad. Of it, 120 mgd
comes from the Manjira and Singur projects. The Manjira phase-I was
commissioned in 1965. In view of increasing population and demand, the
Manjira phase-II was commissioned in 1981 and subsequent phases added.
Chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao had said in Medak two days ago that Manjira water would be utilised exclusively for irrigation purposes after completion of the Krishna phase-III and Godavari phase-I. According to Water Board records, nearly three lakh of the 8.20 lakh connections in areas like Lingampally, Kukatpally, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Somajiguda and other circles get Manjira water on alternate days.
"Nearly half the city will get affected due to the decision. According to the schedule, Krishna phase-III will be commissioned in March-April, 2015 and Godavari project by 2015-end. However, both projects are facing hurdles in land acquisition and allocation of funds," a senior HMWS&SB official told TOI.
As per demand, the water board has to supply nearly 460 mgd of water to Greater Hyderabad in 2014, but was supplying a deficit of 120 mgd. Moreover, 45 mgd of water currently drawn from Osmansagar and Himayathsagar to the city is not in a position to supply due to scanty rainfall, the official further said.
