State seeks more time from NGT on sewage farming case

BHOPAL: State government sought more time from green panel to summon concerned officials from horticulture department in connection with sewage farming case here on Monday. National Green Tribunal (NGT) bench has granted time till December 19 when the case would be heard next.

On September 17, NGT bench comprising judicial member Justice Dalip Singh and expert member P S Rao had included horticulture and food processing department in the list of respondents to provide their report on whether vegetables grown from sewage water are conducive or harmful for human consumption.

State had moved an application to replace farmers' welfare and agriculture development department and include the horticulture department instead. However NGT bench had included both departments.

MP Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) informed they completed survey of six sites and assessed impact of using untreated sewage water for farming, especially vegetable cultivation.

Also, till date, not all collectors have filed their reports to green panel on sewage farming in their districts. Previously, compliance reports of only collectors of Indore, Ashok Nagar, Sidhi, Jhabua, Harda and Dewas districts on sewage farming was submitted.
