Set up CCTV in AMC schools, municipal commissioner urged

AHMEDABAD: A terror attack on Peshawar public school by the Pakistan Taliban has led the Ahmedabad Municipal School Board chairman demand private security and CCTV cameras in the municipal schools. The chairman has written to municipal commissioner D Thara, requesting provision for a hike in the salary of existing security personnel and funds for installation of CCTV cameras.
There are 225 AMC-owned school buildings in which 456 schools function. These schools already have watchmen who are a mix of board employees and private security personnel. These personnel are paid lowly -some earn Rs 2,200 a month - and hence would require an immediate salary hike. There are 160 private security personnel.
"Many of the existing school board-appointed security personnel are old and would retire soon. If a Peshawar-like incident happens in our schools, we would not be able to handle such a tragedy to minimize the casualties," said school board chairman Jagdish Bhavsar.
He said that there are only four AMC schools that have CCTV installed. "I have demanded CCTV cameras in schools and an increase in the salary of security persons for our schools," he adds.
Bhavsar said that some schools do not have proper compound walls. Even the few CCTV cameras that the school board has installed have been sponsored, claimed Bhavsar.
