MUMBAI:
The father of one of those picked up by the National Investigation
Agency (NIA) as a suspect for funding the four Kalyan youths' trip to
Raqqa has written to CM Devendra Fadnavis, urging him to look into the
case.
The father alleged that his son, an engineer, was being tortured at NIA's Pedder Road office, where officers had told him to give a confessional statement in the ISIS case. NIA denied the allegations.
The youths, who had been to Iraq on a pilgrimage, went missing in May. They later informed their families that they had joined the ISIS. The police are questioning four to five youths for allegedly financing the trip knowingly or unknowingly.
The father stated that NIA officials had arrived at his residence in Kalyan and taken away his son on December 5. "They did not allow me to meet him. They kept him, and told me to come the next morning. When I met my son, he told me that the police had stripped him and beaten him up mercilessly, demanding that he accept that he was linked to Areeb Majeed, who has been arrested. My son was also beaten up mercilessly," stated the letter, a copy of which is with TOI.
The father said his son was unable to walk properly after being beaten up.The letter that the NIA officers threatened him that he would be implicated in the case if he did not obey them. "My family, especially my son, is undergoing mental trauma due to the NIA's illegal acts," the letter concluded. An NIA official said, "We are a professional agency and do not use such tactics. The allegations are to divert (attention from) the investigation."
