MUMBAI/NAGPUR:
After a humiliating defeat in the assembly polls, a fresh shock is in
store for Congress—some of its legislators may defect to BJP. This
means, Congress may lose its claim over the leader of opposition post in
the legislative assembly. In that event, NCP, with 41 members, will
stake claim for the post.
If a senior Congress leader is to be believed, such a possibility cannot be ruled out. "There will not be a split in the party. But we will not be surprised if three to four Congress legislators join the BJP." He added that after state Congress president Manikrao Thakre quit the post, hectic lobbying is on for the assignment. Former ministers Nitin Raut and Harshawardhan Patil and former forest minister Patangrao Kadam are in the race.
The Congress leader admitted that after the massive defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, followed by dismal performance in the assembly elections, the party is demoralized. "No steps have been taken for the revival of the organization at the grassroots level. Performance of our newly elected legislators in the legislative business is lackluster." He said AICC general secretary Mohan Prakash, who is in-charge of Maharashtra, former CMs Ashok Chavan and Prithviraj Chavan, legislature party leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Thakre may meet in a day or two to discuss the party's strategy.
