The city celebrates Nirbhaya Diwas in memory of the Delhi gangrape victim
Nirbhaya Diwas — a tribute to the braveheart, who lost her life two
years ago after being gangraped and tortured in a Delhi bus two years
ago — was organized by a city NGO and Jadavpur University recently.
Hundreds joined the silent march from Harish Park to Deshapriya Park to
honour the spirit of the girl and the millions she represents across the
globe. The march was followed by a musical concert, which was laced
with performances by Brahmakhyapa, Crystal Grass and Mantra, and was
attended by the young and the old, who had gathered be part of the
cause. "I respect and support the cause to make Nirbhaya Diwas a special
day. My sincere thanks to the organizers for taking this initiative and
making us part of it. My only request to men would be to respect us as
human beings," said Malabika Brahma, who rendered Khanchar bhitor ochin
pakhi and Hridhmajhare rakhbo. The band, Mantra, performed Dola and
Maula and dedicated the songs to Nirbhaya. We also spotted
singer-composer Anupam Roy at the do. Jadavpur University students, too,
entertained the gathering with a host of performances like slam poetry
and street play. Another event remembering Nirbhaya was organized on
College Street the same day.
