Fill posts in colleges: Teachers to govt


COIMBATORE: More than 200 teachers from various colleges across the state staged a protest at Red Cross at 5.30pm on Thursday.

They were protesting against the state government, holding it accountable for the various problems the teaching and non-teaching staff were facing.

The protest was organized by the joint action council of association of university teachers, Madurai university teachers' association, Tamil Nadu government college teachers' association and Tamil Nadu association for non teaching staff of aided colleges. Teaching and non-teaching staff from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Nilgiris districts participated.

The teachers issued a 25-pointer long pamphlet mentioning the problems they wanted to bring to the state government's notice.The most important grievance, the teachers said, were the vacancies for teaching and non-teaching staff. They said that there are around 3000 vacancies across the state. "These vacancies should be filled immediately. The staff shortage has been a huge burden on the existing teachers," said V alusamy, coordinator of the joint action council. They also wanted the vacancies to be filled in a transparent manner.

The teachers have requested the state government to extend the retirement age from 58 to 62. "Another grievance is the absence of career advancement since 2006, the year the sixth pay commission was implemented," said S Tamil Mani, president, Tamil Nadu government college teachers association. They also wanted a new pension scheme to be implemented alusamy also spoke about the fees being collected across streams in professional institutions. Although the government has fixed the tuition fees, some colleges have been collecting excess fees. and for the government to strictly monitor the fees collected by colleges.
