Chouhan govt has empowered women: Minister

BHOPAL: Minister for women and child development Maya Singh v on Wednesday said the government has failed to change mindset of people who still abandon new-born babies in garbage vats. On Monday and Tuesday, two newborns were found abandoned by their biological mothers in Bhopal and Indore. The minister said she is concerned and pained that such incidents continue to take place despite a clutch of welfare schemes launched for girl children and mothers by the state government.

Speaking to media on achievements of her department in past one year, the minister said, "Women have become empowered in Madhya Pradesh as state government guarantees to take care of a girl child right from her birth with Ladli Laxmi Yojana till the time she gets married under Kanyadaan Yojana and till the time delivers two children. With this, women have been empowered and they know their rights. This is precisely why chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is called 'Mama' (maternal uncle) by children and brother by their mothers."

She explained the Ladli Laxmi Yojana is the unique scheme, which has benefitted 18.5 lakh girl children from April 2006, making them financially secured by the time they are ready to get married. She said the government has spent Rs 4,500 crore on the scheme.
