Bike-borne gang shoots accountant, make away with Rs 7.5 lakh

BENGALURU: Three motorcycle-borne men shot an accountant just outside his company at Pillagumppe Industrial Area in Hoskote, Bengaluru Rural district, on Thursday evening, and made away with his bag containing Rs 7.5 lakh cash.

The incident happened around 3.45 pm when Veerendra Gupta, 28, was returning from the State Bank of Mysore's branch in Hoskote town, about six km from the industrial area, after withdrawing Rs 7.5 lakh. As Gupta reached the entrance of the multinational automotive company, three men on a red Bajaj Pulsar waylaid his Chevrolet Beat car, police said.

As Gupta got out of the car, the motorcyclists tried to snatch his backpack containing cash. "When Gupta resisted, one of the bikers shot at him thrice. Gupta was wounded on the left shoulder, belly and the thigh. As he fell, the trio snatched the bag and sped away," inspector general of police (Central Range) Syed Ulfath Hussein said.

Gupta was rushed to a private hospital in Hoskote, where doctors removed the bullets. He was then shifted to Manipal Hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.

Police said they were examining the bullets and summoned ballistic experts to the spot.

"It seems the trio knew Gupta's movements. Some people who were at the gate, including security guards, are being questioned whether they saw two of the assailants who were not wearing helmets. Only the rider was wearing a helmet," an officer said.

Police suspect that the robbers might have been trailing Gupta from the bank and known that the his car would slow down at the entrance to wait for the security guards to open the gates.
