22-yr-old studying medicine in Russia found dead

Agra: Mystery shrouds the death of Prakash Das, 22, found hanging in a flat in Sikandra. The youth, from Rajasthan, had been a student of medicine in Russia. His parents in Rajasthan had no clue he was in the country and were shocked to hear of his death.

His body was discovered on Wednesday by his fellow-student in Russia, Manoj, who hails from Farah in Mathura. It was Manoj who informed police of the death.

Policemen said a likely cause of suicide was tension that the youth had been facing, after his education visa expired three months ago.

Prakash Das had been in Sikandra for the past three months, unknown to his family. The youth's kin arrived in Agra to claim the body, and alleged that he was murdered, most likely by the man who informed police of the death. Prakash had been living in Russia for two years.

"The post-mortem report showed that the death was because of hanging. Some texts from Prakash's diary, and his friend's statements, revealed that the young man was in tension, and may have taken the extreme step after his visa expired and he was not allowed to continue living in Russia. Police is investigating," said SK Singh, inspector Sikandara police station. Curiously, Manoj has been missing ever since he informed police of the death.

The police officer said the parents of the young man had claimed that his laptop and mobile phone were missing.

Prakash's brother Dilraj, who plays hockey at the national level, said his brother was most likely murdered. He alleged that a girl was also involved in the murder, as Prakash had got a woman to speak with the family just days ahead of his death, expressing a desire to marry. He had called from an Indian number, but refused to divulge where he was.

"I had not imagined that it would be the last time I would be speaking with him," Shravan Das, his father, said.

"Prakash left home in August with Rs 2 lakh, which he said he would pay as college fees. He never mentioned to us that his visa had expired. Instead, he kept asking for more money in the past few months," Dilraj said.

The young man's family said the man who had informed police of the death had been missing, and expressed the fear that he might have committed the murder for money.
